Exercise after Bariatric Surgery
Exercise after Bariatric Surgery

After your Bariatric surgery with Dr. Shillingford it is extremely important to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Exercise can be in the form of walking, going to the gym, aerobics, swimming, bike riding, lifting weights, there are many ways to incorporate exercise to get a great workout. Many patients find it very difficult to exercise before surgery due to numerous reasons, such as knee or back pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and heart conditions. Dr. Shillingford strongly recommends an exercise program that works for each individual patient. There are many reasons why exercise is such an important factor after your Bariatric Surgery, whether it be the Lap Band, The Gastric Sleeve, or the Gastric Bypass. Some of these are listed below:

  • Relieves stress
  • Increases energy
  • Lowers Blood Pressure
  • Strengthens Bones
  • Enhances immune system
  • Improves mood
  • Burns calories
  • Reduces fat
  • Builds Muscle

When you start your exercise program for weeks 1-4 you will want to start slowly, since you are still in the process of healing from your surgery, an example of starting slowly is walking at least 3x a week for about a half hour to an hour. Once you have had your follow up appointment with Dr.Shillingford and he has cleared you to begin a more advanced exercise program you may advance to using the treadmill, or using a stationery riding bike.

Always remember that along with proper exercise comes eating a proper diet which should consist of eating plenty of protein and protein helps to build muscle and drinking plenty of water to keep you hydrated especially while exercising.
